Roast & Toast Gala

2015 Gala Was a Night to Remember!

On September 17, 2015, the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation had close to 450 for dinner at its fourth Roast & Toast Gala held in Birmingham at the Cahaba Grand. This year the honoree was Dean Charles Gamble whose love and knowledge of the law was shared with law school students over four decades.
The evening was filled with laughter, smiles, memories, old friends and good food. Dean Gamble was “roasted” well-done by a series of speakers, honored by the Presidents of the Alabama State Bar (Lee Copeland) and the Alabama Association of Justice (Josh Wright), and toasted by all in attendance.  But Dean Gamble got his turn at the end to do a little “roasting” himself in typical “Gamble” form.
Ken Riley (Farris, Riley & Pitt), ACJF president, welcomed everyone to the event and Leigh O’Dell (Beasley Allen) gave the invocation.  Bobby Segall (Copeland Franco) was the evening’s master of ceremonies. Presenters were Jim Pratt (Hare Wynn), Liz Huntley (Lightfoot Franklin) and Dean John Carroll (Cumberland School of Law). The program also included numerous glimpses of Dean Gamble as a young boy all the way to his current honored status as a grandfather. There were even glimpses of him teaching in his dramatically engaged style that made everyone at the Gala instantly feel “unprepared for class.”
However, the evening was not just for fun and memories. It had a focus toward the future. With the support of over 97 sponsors (click here), the Gala helped ACJF to raise funds to support its Access to Justice grants. Dean Gamble made the very first contribution and then helped us to identify two Co-Hosts, Jim Pratt (Hare Wynn) and Boots Gale (Regions) and a strong Host Committee (click here) all of whom solicited sponsors for the event. Total contributions totaled $237,000 making this the largest fund raiser ever held by the Foundation and a great opportunity to expand the good civil legal aid work being done in our state.

Alabama’s legal community will not soon forget this spectacular event. The Alabama State Bar made September 17th, from this year on, Dean Charles Gamble Day. ACJF thanks everyone who helped make this evening special including our honoree and our many sponsors.
